How to join a meeting in Microsoft Teams

I have been doing #MicrosoftTeams meetings daily for the past two and a half months now as a teacher doing remote learning. This may differ depending on how your school uses Teams but I set up meetings at specific times each day in the General channel of my class team and children join the live lessons on their computers, mobiles and tablets. We have run into many problems over the weeks, especially with students joining meetings, but luckily there are lots of things you can try to help you get connected with your class online!

How to join a meeting in Microsoft Teams

Assuming you are logged into Microsoft Teams either on the desktop application or the web version, you will need to navigate to the channel in which the meeting is going on. If there is a meeting going on in a channel, you’ll see a video icon to the right of the channels name in the left-hand panel. In the channel, you’ll see a blue ‘Join’ button. When clicked you’ll be asked if you’d like to join with your microphone and video on or off and then you’ll be added to the meeting. When a meeting starts in a channel that you are part of you will also see a pop-up notification in the bottom right corner of the window where a ‘Join’ button.

Do I need to download Microsoft Teams to use it?

On a computer, no, but on a mobile, yes.

You can use Microsoft Teams from a web browser as well as with the application which means you won’t have to download it. You will have to download the Microsoft Teams app from your app store to use it on mobile though as the web browser version won’t work on mobile devices.


Join a Meeting in Microsft Teams Mobile App

The only way to join meetings on mobile devices is to use a Teams mobile application. For iPhone or iPad users, there is Microsoft Teams app in the App Store. For Android users, you’ll find a Teams app on the Google Play store. If you have another kind of device you can check if there is a Teams application for you by searching your app store.


When using the Teams mobile app to join a meeting you’ll need to go to the channel where the meeting is going on to be able to join because you won’t see pop-up notifications about meetings starting. Once you get to the channel where the meeting has started you will see the blue ‘Join’ button just as you do on the desktop versions of Teams.


Can't Join a Meeting in Microsoft Teams

There are several reasons why you might not be able to join a meeting:

  • You might not be a member of the team or the channel where a meeting is going on

  • The number of people in the meeting that you are trying to join may be at its limit already (250 people)

  • You might not have a stable internet connection

  • Glitches or errors in the Teams software

If you are using mobile or desktop Teams applications:

  • Check that your MS teams application is completely updated

  • If you were using the desktop application of Microsoft Teams, try using the MS Teams web version instead

  • Check that any antivirus or security software that you have is not blocking MS Teams

If you are using the web version of MS Teams:

  • If you were on the web version, try clearing your cache

Join Microsoft Teams External Meeting

To join a Teams meeting created by an organisation that you are not a part of, you’ll need to use an email link. If the organisation has invited you to join the meeting, you should have received an email with a link which will let you join via the web version of Teams or the application if you have it installed.


Join Microsoft Teams Meeting with Code

You’ll need a dial-in number and a conference ID to join a meeting from the app by phone. You can find the dial-in number from the meeting details in the calendar. If you’re not a Microsoft Teams member you’ll receive an email invitation which contains the phone number to call to dial-in to a Microsoft Teams meeting.

You may receive a code that you can use to join a Team that you are not already a part of within your organisation or school, but this is not used to join meetings. Instead, you’d have to use the code to join the Team and then join meetings when they occur.


How to Join a Scheduled meeting in Microsoft teams

To join a scheduled meeting, you can go to the channel where the meeting is going on and click on the blue ‘Join’ button or you can select the meeting in your calendar view and join it from there.
