Updated: Apr 18

Typing can be tedious when you first learn and not every school project is exciting but adding a bit of colour and creativity to documents might spice things up a bit for kids. Find out how to add thousands of amazing fonts and add awesome rainbow colours to your text with some easy to install and free add-ons for Google Docs. In this video, I'll show you three quick easy ways to get these cool fonts and colours that will make typing on Google Docs so much more fun and interesting for kids.

How to get more fonts on Google Docs

You can have access to thousands of beautiful fonts whilst working in Google Docs using the Extensis Fonts add-on. It's free and it's easy to install - just click on Add-ons in the menu at the top of your Google Docs window and select Get add-ons. Next type 'Extensis' into the search bar in the top right of the G Suite Marketplace window that comes up. Click on the Extensis Fonts add-on and then click on the blue Install button.

You'll be prompted to sign in to your Google account and give your permission by clicking the blue Allow button at the bottom of the window once signed in successfully. Once the add-on is installed you can use it by clicking the Add-ons menu again and hovering over Extensis Fonts before clicking on start.

A panel will come up down the right-hand side of the of your window now where you can browse through the fonts and even sort or filter them in different ways to help you find one you like. Watch the video to see some examples of the huge collection of fonts availabe!

How to get rainbow text on Google Docs

There are two add-ons for Google Docs that allow you to create rainbow fonts - Rainbow Magic Unicorns and Fun Text. Install them using the Get Add-ons option in the Add-ons menu to be able to use them in your document. Rainbow Magic Unicorns is just for giving font colours and the highlight colours a rainbow effect whereas Fun Text has lots of interesting options like turning your text upside down, randomizing the capital and lowercase letters, playing with the sizes and more as well as the rainbow text colours.

Rainbow Magic Unicorns can be used with a side panel that is brought up by clicking on start after hovering over Rainbow Magic Unicorns in the Add-ons menu. Fun Text, on the other hand, can be used from the menu where you'll find all the options for customizing your text. Check out the video above to see some of the effects your kids can add to the text of their document with this add-on.
